TTREATMENT OF ANIMALS

TTREATMENT OF ANIMALS

Sahl bin Hanzaliyyah reports that the Prophet ﷺ once passed by a camel whose belly had stuck to his back; he enjoined that they should fear God in the matter of dumb creatures. They should ride them in their good condition and leave them in good condition. (Abu Daud)
Abdullah bin Ja'far reports that the Prophet ﷺ went to the (palm) grove of an Ansari where a camel stood tied up. On seeing the Prophet ﷺ the camel cried as if in distress and both his eyes became moist. The Prophet ﷺ went near him and affectionately patted his hunch and temple that pacified him. The Prophet ﷺ then asked whose camel it was. A young Ansari came and said it was his. The Prophet ﷺ asked him if he was not afraid of God about the animals that he had placed under him. That camel was complaining to him (with wet eyes and plaintive cry) that its owner kept it hungry and took continuous work. (Riyad us Swalihin quoting from Abu Daud)
Abu Huraira says that the Prophet ﷺ had said, "When you travel in the season of abundance you should allow your camels to have their share of the produce of the earth and when you travel in the season of scarcity you should drive them fast." (Muslim)
Abi Ya’la Shaddad bin Aus says that the Prophet ﷺ had said, "God has prescribed that every work should be done in a proper manner. If you kill anyone, do it nicely and when you sacrifice an animal do it in the proper manner. You should sharpen your knife and spare the animal the agony of death-pangs for long; it should be done in such a way that it dies soon." (Muslim)
Abdullah bin Umar says that he heard the Prophet ﷺ prohibit an animal or bird or man to be tied up and struck with arrows." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Jabir reports that the Prophet ﷺ had prohibited hitting animals on their faces or branding their faces with a hot iron. (Muslim)
Abdullah bin Amr bin As says that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "If anyone wantonly kills a sparrow or any other smaller bird he will be called to account for it by God." On further enquiry the Prophet said, "It is due to the birds that they are eaten after killing and should not be thrown away after cutting their heads." (Mishkat quoting from Ahmad)
Abdur Rahman bin Abdullah reports from his father that once they were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey and the Prophet went out for a while. They saw a small bird with its two young ones and they caught hold of them when the mother bird spreading its wings began to hover over them. In the meantime, the Prophet ﷺ came and observed the restlessness of the bird. He asked who had troubled the bird about its young ones and ordered that they be restored to their mother. Then the Prophet ﷺ saw an anthill, which they had burnt and inquired who had done it. On their admitting that they had done it, the Prophet said, "Punishment by fire is the right of the Creator of fire alone." (Abu Daud)
Abdullah bin Abbas reports that the Prophet ﷺ had prohibited animal fights as sport. (Tirmidhi)
Abu Huraira says that the Prophet ﷺ had said that a man while travelling felt very thirsty and looking around he found a well, got down into it and quenched his thirst. On coming out he found a dog, lolling out its tongue in thirst and eating wet earth. The man realising that the dog was as thirsty as he himself was, got down into the well again, filled his leather socks with water and came out holding the socks with his teeth and gave water to the dog and for this act of his, God forgave his sins. Those present asked if mercy shown to animals was also to be rewarded, the Prophet ﷺ replied in the affirmative. (Bukhari & Muslim)
Abdullah bin Umar says that the Prophet ﷺ had said that a merciless and callous woman was thrown into hell because she had kept a cat tied up and did not give it any food, nor did she release it that it might feed on vermin. (Bukhari & Muslim)
